The Lexington Police Department currently has several vacant police officer positions. To help fill these openings with high-quality, experienced candidates, the department is hiring retired LPD police officers to rejoin the force via the Sworn Police Officer – R Program. Retirees participating in the program will be hired at the highest officer step/pay rate associated with the current collective bargaining agreement. Effective July 3, 2023, the pay is $81,702 plus the $4,300 KLEFPF pay for a total annual salary of $86,002. Retirees will accrue vacation, holiday and sick leave time at the same rate as a topped-out officer. Up to 160 hours of accumulated vacation/holiday/sick time may be paid out each January at the employee’s regular pay rate. Only 40 hours of combined vacation/holiday time may be carried over from year to year. Retirees are not eligible for health insurance through their employment. Those benefits will remain as part of their retirement. If otherwise eligible, they may participate in the benefit pool programs offered to LFUCG employees (other than health insurance). Retirees may work approved off-duty employment after they complete the required initial training. Retirees will be eligible for a take-home vehicle after they complete the required initial training. Neither the retiree nor LFUCG will be making pension contributions. Retirees are not eligible to earn a second pension. Retirees must have retired on years of service from the Lexington Police Department within the last five years and left in good standing with no administrative charges pending. The Chief, at their sole discretion, may consider those separated more than five years based upon specific circumstances. Seniority shall commence on the first date of re-employment and shall accrue for each continuous contractual year of service with LPD in the re-employment program thereafter. The initial assignment of retirees will be in Patrol. Once they have been employed for at least one continuous year they shall be eligible to apply for any vacancy in any department bureau. Retirees will not be eligible for participation in the promotional process. All contracts will expire on December 31 of each year and may be renewed at the discretion of the Chief of Police. Per KRS, retirees must be separated from service for a period of not less than thirty (30) days to be eligible for employment. They also must have retired with no preexisting agreement or arrangement to return to work for LFUCG. As such, current employees are not eligible to submit an application for the Sworn Police Officer – R Program until the day after their retirement date. Senate Bill 89 was the legislation passed regarding the re-employment of retired Lexington Police Department Officers. More about Senate Bill 89 can be found at the link below.
